Bass Extase

Feature documentary film about the history of Drum & Bass and Bass music culture.

For 7 years, director Laurent Pasquier travelled throughout Europe and immersed himself fully in the culture of bass music to meet the first performers and pioneers of this rich culture. A cross-breed of Afro-Jamaican and African-American who merged in England in the early 1990s to give rise to many genres and currents of electronic music.

He made a 1 hour film about the history of Drum&bass, the first genre of Bass music to appear, as well as a photographic exhibition, a web-documentary series about the universe of Bass music and many events dedicated to this genre.

The film was screened notably at the Grand Rex in Paris, at independent cinemas and contemporary music scenes in France, as well as for Red Bull Colombia and the Alliance Française from Bogota in Colombia. It is still continuing its journey by being programmed all over the world.

For 1 year, Laurent Pasquier immersed himself in this place, meeting its inhabitants in order to understand and capture the essence and soul of this unique, historical and mythical place of the Parisian underground culture.

A place that for 15 years has been a rich and intense cultural actor for the city of Paris and the 20th arrondissement by hosting artists’ workshops, exhibition galleries, lifestyle spaces, dance classes and eclectic concerts with international musicians who were born there.

A place that was threatened with expulsion and closed a few years after the documentary was released. The film has been screened during various evenings in France, notoriously in order to support this place and its habitants.
